Spanish at Woodstock Day School is a continual arc of learning that begins in Nursery School and continues through the Upper School, giving students the opportunity to build confidence and deep communicative abilities over many years. That continuity matters. It allows Spanish to become part of students’ intellectual and cultural world over time – something they hear, speak, revisit, and progress as they grow. In a school environment that values curiosity, hands-on learning, and strong relationships, language study becomes another way students connect: to one another, to wider cultures, and the world beyond campus.
In the early years, Spanish instruction at WDS is rooted in exposure: repetition, song, movement, and play. Our youngest students begin by hearing and using language in ways that feel natural and engaging, building comfort alongside vocabulary and listening skills. In Lower School, that foundation expands through more structured practice: growing conversational ability, cultural learning, and longer-term projects with performance as an end goal. In Middle and Upper School, students continue developing their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension with greater depth and independence.

What makes the WDS Spanish program distinctive? Not only that it spans Nursery School through 12th grade, but that it does so within a schoolwide approach that values continuity and active engagement? . The result is a program that supports both practical language acquisition and a larger habits of mind: openness to other people and curiosity about the world.
