Curriculum, teaching and learning from nursery school to 12th grade is hands-on, rooted in inquiry and problem solving, and incorporates student interests and relevant topics.
Our nursery classroom is a warm, nurturing, respectful and safe environment, in which young children can be themselves, explore, and try new things. We use a play-based curriculum that allows children to discover the world that surrounds them and develop the capacity to connect with others. Each day our classroom contains planned activities, and a selected variety of materials for children to manipulate, explore, observe, listen to, play with, interact with, snuggle with, and to share.
Our curriculum fosters cognitive, social/emotional, physical and language development.
Our nursery classroom includes a routine of free choice, structured activities, active social play, quiet independent play, and both indoor and outdoor playtime. We start each day with a Morning Meeting, which helps us to create a strong classroom community. On a typical day, children can be observed building a bridge for cars or a farm for animals in the block area; creating a restaurant or market, and running a cash register in the Dramatic Play area; exploring with a variety of materials and colors to create art collages or paintings; writing friendship messages to classmates; baking, cooking, making mud or sand pies, weaving, singing, dancing and playing instruments, all within an overall community-building atmosphere.
Nursery School students have opportunities for sand and water play, block play, art, music, movement, yoga, story time, physical activity, visiting the library, science and math exploration, role-playing and dramatic play and lots and lots of social interactions.
Our Preschool is a nurturing, child-centered environment where children have numerous opportunities for emotional, social, intellectual, and physical growth. We start each day with a Morning Meeting, which helps us to create a strong classroom community.
We understand that each child develops at their own rate.
Each child’s individual needs, abilities, and stages of learning are paramount in the design of our curriculum. We offer experiences and guide learning in a manner that is respectful of the child’s individual needs. In this way, we support each child to take their next steps towards becoming independent, self-assured, and inquisitive learners and kind friends.
Our classroom has a safe and cozy feel. Respecting others, tolerating differences, negotiating conflict, learning to take turns, and sharing the role of leadership are all an integral part of our daily lives in the class. We foster independence and self-confidence; we role-model and practice the community and social skills necessary for each child to thrive in a supportive and stimulating environment.
On a typical day in Preschool, children can be observed singing, reading books, painting, playing imaginatively, building with blocks, pouring and filling and exploring at the water/tactile table, planting seeds and observing their growth. The children fashion collages; act out stories; piece together puzzles; count, count and count some more; learn to write their names; draw with crayons and markers; play outside twice a day; cook or bake weekly; take trips; and enjoy their time together. Weekly specials include art, music, library, physical education, Spanish, and science.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade
In our Kindergarten and 1st Grade classrooms, children engage in creative play to ignite their imaginations and create community, while building foundational skills to support them in becoming mathematicians, authors, and readers. We start each day with a Morning Meeting, which helps us to create a strong classroom community.
Throughout the day, students are challenged to work cooperatively, with many hands-on group activities, and can often be found making use of our beautiful campus as we extend our classroom to the outdoors.
