With engaging activities and personalized learning experiences, our Early Childhood program is designed to foster a love for learning and build a strong foundation for your child’s academic journey.
We nurture your child’s social and emotional growth through activities like Circle Time, Morning Meetings, Friday Gatherings, the Buddies Program, and more. Our aim is to create a supportive community where every student feels valued and connected.
Our dynamic and interactive curriculum is hands-on, rooted in inquiry, and incorporates student interests. We believe in individualized learning, and our assessments help us tailor support to each student’s needs.
At Woodstock Day School, we value play, ensuring our students have ample time to be outdoors, forming strong friendships, and enjoying their learning environment. Our 40-acre wooded campus is a living classroom, where children can play, learn, and connect with nature. Our facilities offer dedicated spaces for library, art, science, and physical education.
At our Nursery School, each day brings a mix of free choice and structured activities, fostering a vibrant learning environment. We kick off the day with a Morning Meeting, building a strong classroom community. Children engage in diverse activities like building with blocks, exploring art, writing messages, and enjoying outdoor play. From sand and water play to music and storytelling, our Nursery School program encourages creativity, social interactions, and a nurturing atmosphere.
In Preschool, a typical day is filled with singing, painting, imaginative play, and hands-on activities like building with blocks and exploring the water/tactile table. Children engage in various creative endeavors, from planting seeds to crafting collages and acting out stories. Daily activities include counting, learning to write names, drawing, outdoor play, weekly cooking sessions, and exciting trips.
In Kindergarten and 1st Grade, we foster creativity, community, and foundational skills in math, writing, and reading. The day begins with a Morning Meeting to build a strong classroom community. Students engage in creative play, hands-on group activities, and utilize our beautiful campus for outdoor learning, enhancing their cooperative and foundational skills to become mathematicians, authors, and readers.
The journey from Nursery School to Kindergarten unfolds as students progress from foundational language development in Nursery School to formal language arts in Preschool and then delve into comprehensive literacy exploration in Kindergarten. The transition to Grade 1 sees a further advancement in reading and writing skills, with a focus on diverse topics and a marked growth in students’ writing abilities.
Our hands-on approach to Early Childhood mathematics emphasizes counting, addition, subtraction, and understanding geometric shapes. By the end of this stage, students master counting to 120, basic operations within 20, time, measurement, and place value. Concrete objects and manipulatives are used to connect mathematical concepts to formal notation.
From Nursery School to Grade 1, students explore the natural world, delving into topics like plants, insects, weather, and more. Through hands-on experiences and Expeditionary Learning Labs, they gain a holistic understanding of scientific concepts and their real-world applications.
Our social studies curriculum encourages students to explore their local and global communities. Starting from Nursery School, they learn about natural resources and progress to understanding individual identity, citizenship, and the environment. Key skills include collaboration, communication, mapping, and cultural awareness.
Our Early Childhood program nurtures creativity through art and music. Students experiment with various artistic media, explore color, and develop fine motor skills. In music, they progress from simple rhythms and instrument recognition to understanding musical notation, exploring genres, and expressing themselves through singing and movement.
Our students start building their skills to understand and speak Spanish, the second most spoken language in the United States. In Spanish class, children learn organically through songs, covering essential topics like numbers, body parts, and colors.
Physical Education classes focus on developmentally appropriate activities, promoting movement, play, and social-emotional skills.
The Learning Lab is a special service that helps students with different learning needs. It’s made just for them and can be personalized. Your child might have one-on-one sessions with a certified teacher, join small group lessons, or get help right in your regular class. The Learning Lab also keeps parents updated on their child’s progress with regular reports home.
